I was just skimming threw comments posted on dasouth.com about the song “Boy I Got so Many” released on Milliyon’s Communication 101 mixtape. It was about my third time browsing that same post. It’s amazing to me how so many Christians will easily critique and tear down this style of ministry.

When you look at the mainstream music, there is just as much criticism against artist trying to express themselves in one way or another. My question is; why on Earth would we mimic this part if any? I just don’t get it.

Here’s the perspective coming from an independent artist that has been grinding in the urban gospel genera for a min. There are not nearly as many places to promote urban gospel and holy hip hop when compared to mainstream music. The very resources that stands as a powerhouse and a foundation behind mainstream music are night clubs and alcohol, which happen to be two things that Christians shouldn’t have any part of. Mainstream has way more media outlets including television, radio, magazines, ect….

So with all that being said, why on Earth wouldn’t we as Christians be more supportive of our own? Urban gospel and Holy Hip Hop remains to be the wicked stepchild of music. Its the child that few want to feed and care for. We will sit back and say…”Hey all of your music should glorify God, and him alone! You shouldn’t sing about anything else!”  While its true that I wanna let the world know how great God is, if that was all that I talked about, how can I expect to compete with musical content that has no boundaries? I just can’t agree with that way of thinking! How long will we try to fit God in such a small box?

Even if I wasn’t in agreement with Christian artist that talk about money, or life’s struggles, or any other subject that didn’t glorify God, with knowing that these kinds of artist have little to no resources, I still would support them. Isn’t that the Christian thing to do?

At the end of the day, all of us representing urban Gospel, and Holy Hip Hop have a heart for Christ, and would like to express ourselves artistically through music. If we don’t support our own, then who will? Some of you will continue to use theology and bible scriptures to support the public dismantle of our own representatives, but I pray that somebody would just stop all the stone throwing, and just support. Please……just support.
